Abstract:
Radioactivity of sediment and sand sampled from the Danube ecosystem near Novi Sad was studied. The radionuclide content of 24 sand and 24 sediment samples was measured by high-resolution gamma spectroscopy. Except 137Cs, no traces of anthropogenic radionuclides were found. The results showed that the activity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in the samples collected from the Danube beaches did not exceed those characteristic of the soils of the Vojvodina region. At the same time, some samples from the Danube-Tisa-Danube (DTD) channel displayed marked 238U levels. At the Danube beaches, the exposure to gamma rays emitted by 137Cs of sand and sediment origin was estimated to be 0.72 nSv/yr.
