Heavy Metals and Inorganic Cations in Soil and Sugar Beet Pulp in Northern Serbia

Abstract:
Concentration of heavy metals and inorganic cations were measured in the soil and composite samples of sugar beet pulp of bulk storage taken from two sites in Bačka and one in the Srem region (Serbia). Inorganic cations (K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ in mg/kg) were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique. The contents of Pb, As, Cd (μg/kg), Cu, and Fe (mg/kg) were a nalysed by a flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with graphite furnace and Hg (μg/kg) with hydride generation. In the soil of the South Bačka region, the main plant-available cations were Fe, Pb, Zn, and Cd and in the sugar beet pulp Fe, Zn, and Cd, while the concentrations of heavy metals were negligible substantiating that sugar beet pulp was a safe product for making either feed mashes or fiber rich food additives and other similar products.
