Micronuclei and Other Nuclear Anomalies in Exfoliated Buccal and Uterine Cervical Cells of Healthy Armenian Women

Abstract:
The levels of micronuclei (MN) and other nuclear anomalies (karyorrhexis, karyolysis, pycnosis, binucleates, condensed chromatin, “broken egg”) were studied in exfoliated buccal and uterine cervical cells of 10 postmenopausal and 10 healthy Armenian females with normal menstrual function. The other nuclear anomalies were studied for the first time in cervical cells. In the MN level, no significant difference was obtained between the two cell types or between the two groups. However, the frequencies of cells displaying the other nuclear anomalies showed significant difference in the cervical cells of postmenopausal females as compared to that of women with regular menstrual function. The results suggest that the change might be attributed to postmenopausal degenerative processes.
