UV-C Irradiation-induced DNA Damage in Leukocytes of Patients with Familial Mediterranean Fever

Summary:
It has been shown recently that lymphocytes of patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) are very sensitive to the clastogenic action of some chemical agents. The aim of this work was to estimate DNA damage induced by UV-C in leukocytes of FMF patients by means of the comet assay. Blood samples were collected from 10 patients and 10 healthy subjects of corresponding ages (control). The results showed statistically significant difference between the blood samples of the FMF patients and those of the controls in the induced levels of DNA damage one hour after UV-C irradiation. We suggest that it may be due to an increased sensitivity of DNA in leukocytes of patients with FMF.
