PROBLEMS IN THE STUDY OF EMBEDDED HAZARDOUS WASTES

ABSTRACT: The authors established that the present Hungarian standard is not suitable for modelling the environmental leaching processes, because it does not prescribe a pH control required for the equilibrium tests, or does not use repeated of acidified/ buffered leachant for the dynamic test of monolithic products. In addition, the patent does not contain methods for testing non-monolithic, granulated or lumpy embedded wastes.
    The authors have suggested some possible leaching methods of embedded wastes. In monolithic forms it should be performed an equilibrium test in demineralised water (pH = 7) and in buffered (pH = 4.5) ammonium acetate solution beside pH control. Whereas the test of granulated and lumpy embedded wastes is suggested to be performed from the extracts prescribed for the present Hungarian standard of hazardous wastes taking into account for particle size and extraction time. These methods should be standardised considering the results of the experiments.
