Occurrence of Natural Radionuclides in Refuse Dump Sites Within the City of Ado-Ekiti, Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract:
Natural radioactivity content of soil samples from thirty refuse dump sites in Ado-Ekiti, southwestern Nigeria, was determined using a NaI(Tl)-based low-level gamma-counting system. Mean concentrations of 758.51±132.93, 36.57±2.70 and 25.73±5.60 Bq·kg–1 were obtained for 40K, 226Ra(238U) and 228Ra(232Th), respectively. The average absorbed dose rate and the annual effective dose equivalent amounted to 0.0646 μGy·h–1 and 0.40 mSv·yr–1, respectively, while the collective effective dose equivalent of 59.8 manSv·y–1 was obtained for the whole city. The values obtained did not constitute any radiological burden to the human population of the city.
