* Edited version of the Bacq and Alexander Award Lecture delivered at the 33th Annual Meeting
of the European Society for Radiation Biology, Budapest, August 25–28, 2004

I am grateful to the European Society of Radiation Biology for the Bacq and Alexander Award 2004, especially for recognizing the importance of the area of radiation cytogenetics. I would like to present in this paper, a chronological review of the various studies which gave insights into the mechanisms involved in the formation of ionising radiation (IR) induced chromosomal aberrations based mainly on the studies carried out in my laboratory over the past three decades. Though the efficiency of IR to induce chromosomal aberrations was recognized almost a century ago, identification and quantification of IR-induced aberrations have improved with the advances in cytological techniques to generate high quality chromosome preparations and staining techniques (for a review see Natarajan, 2002).
